Gallbladder stones in medical terminology is called as Choelelithiasis. The usual symptoms is patient will have nausea, vomiting sensation. Patient will have indigestion for fatty food, on and off pain abdomen or correlate these symptoms into gastritis. The classical symptom of Choelelithiasis is pain in the right hypochondrium or upper belly of the abdomen and indigestion to fat food, nausea and heart burn. The Gallbladder stones are seen in patients with obesity, in females and those who are above 40 years, there is no need to treat all the Gallbladder stones. Usually patient will come to us with ultrasound scans done for other diseases. They will have Gallbladder stones. So according to us there is no need to treat all the Gallbladder stones with surgery. If the patient has really a pain due to Gallbladder stones or infection of the Gallbladder stones that is cholecystitits or the patient with diabetes have Gallbladder stones and the size of the Gallbladder stones is multiple and more than 1 cms are the indication for surgery, the surgery for Gallbladder stones is laparoscopic or keyhole surgery. It is a painless procedure and it is a day care procedure. In my centre I operate in the morning with laparoscopic procedure and discharge in the evening. It is a painless procedure and there will not be any stitches and patient can resume his normal activities in day or two. There are complicated Gallbladder stones where the gallbladder stones are in the common bile duct or Gallbladder stones entering the pancreatic duct causing pancreatitis. These are the complications of the Gallbladder stones and sometimes if the infection is neglected, the patient will have pus in the Gallbladder, hat is called as empyema gall bladder. So these are the complications of Gallbladder, here keyhole surgery may not be possible and we will not be able to do an open surgery. So that is why easy recognition of symptomatic Gallbladder stones is very important for after Gallbladder surgery.
